Bill Berghoff, President

Bill has held various positions over his 30 year career at Sportsplex USA. The first two years, Bill focused exclusively on marketing and building a customer base at the Poway Sports Park. As softball reached capacity, he was promoted to General Manager and turned his attention to operations. Bill’s responsibilities increased to include accounting, staffing, budgeting, and marketing, as well as being Sportsplex USA’s liaison with the City of Poway. Bill oversaw the financing, design, and construction of several park additions including a roller hockey rink and two indoor soccer arenas. In 2000, Bill founded Sportsplex USA Consulting, Inc. which specializes in the feasibility, design and operation of sports parts through public/private partnerships.


In 2003 Sportsplex USA was selected from a nationwide pool of potential operators to serve as the primary design consultant and operator of the newly approved sports complex in Santee, CA. Bill worked closely with the City of Santee and its design team through all phases of development. Bill provides expertise in the design components, financial viability, marketing and overall operation of sports complexes.


Sean Melvin, Senior Vice President

Sean has a well-rounded background in the sporting industry. In the 30 years Sean has been with Sportsplex USA, he has been a softball coordinator, a hockey coordinator, a tournament director, a facility manager and ultimately in 2000 became the General Manager at the Poway Sports Park. In Sean’s 3 decades of involvement in softball, he has been a director with ASA (Amateur Softball Association), a director with NSA (National Softball Association) and is currently on the national executive council of USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association). Sean is currently the Southern California Adult Slow Pitch Commissioner with USSSA and is the National Chairman of the USSSA Slow Pitch Task Force.


Eddie Vandiver, Senior Vice President

Eddie brings over 25 years of Food & Beverage knowledge and facility management experience to our team. Eddie has worked for several national restaurant chains, including most recently Chili’s for 10 years in the capacity of General Manager. At Chili’s he was responsible for financial leadership, district wide new management hiring and training, and the opening of new restaurants. Eddie was in charge of opening over 15 new locations for Chili’s.. Eddie was responsible for all new hires (app. 200 new hires per location), vendor and utility set up, facility organization and construction completion. Eddie has been the General Manager of the Sportsplex USA in Santee, CA since it opened in 2010. Eddie is in charge of the entire operation from hiring to sports programming implementation to kitchen and maintenance operations


Jim Tuyay, Vice President

Jim has been with Sportsplex USA for 30 years. He has over 35 years of experience managing leagues and tournaments in softball, youth and high school baseball, flag football, youth and adult volleyball. Jim has held Director’s positions with many of the major sanctioning bodies including USSSA, USTSA, and Extreme Diamond Sports. Jim is a major tournament director in San Diego and has managed over 600 tournaments with over 200,000 participants.


Chris Vertrees, Director of Marketing

Chris Vertrees, Sportsplex USA’s Director of Marketing has 25 years of experience in recreational sports management. Chris served as a YMCA Sports and Athletics Director for 7 years. Chris has been on the Sportsplex USA’s management team for 15 years. He has in-depth knowledge of youth and adult recreational sports programming and staffing. He also possesses a strong understanding of traditional marketing techniques, social media and networking, as well as SEO and SEM. His vast experience with sports program budgets and fiscal analysis has made him a valuable member of our consulting team and he has assisted in the research and development of several sports complex feasibility studies.
